Breaking News! USCIS Returns to the 2008 Version of the Naturalization Civics Test

On February 22, 2021 the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced the return to the 2008 version of the naturalization civics test. This test will beginning on March 1, 2021. The civics test is given to applicants who apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization and is one of the statutory requirements. Applicants must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history and form of government of the United States.

Back in December of 2020, USCIS had implemented a revised naturalization civics test as part of a test review and update process. The 2020 Civics test requires the applicant to study 128 questions about American government and history. Applicants must answer 12 of the 20 questions correctly to pass the test. All questions are asked orally. The 2008 Civics test is given by a USCIS officer. The offices will ask the applicant up to 10 questions from the list of 100 questions. The applicant must answer 6 questions correctly to pass the 2008 version of the civics test.

Applicants who filed their application for naturalization on or after December 1, 2020 and before March 1, 2021 will be given the option to take either the 2020 civics test or the 2008 civics test. There will be a transition period where both tests will be offered.

Supreme Courts orders DACA to be restored!

What to do if ICE knocks on your door!

Know your rights

o Do not open the door unless they have a warrant signed by a judge

Ask them to give you the warrant under the door

An administrative order of expulsion from immigration authorities is NOT enough

If agents do not speak Spanish, ask for an interpreter

Tell you children not to answer the door

You have the right to remain silent

Do not sign anything

Do not lie

Do not run

o Ask to speak to an attorney

How to prepare beforehand

Talk with your family and create a written plan about what to do in the event of a detention or deportation

o Talk to your children about the responsibilities to be taken in case of an emergency

o Learn about executing Power of Attorney documents (which gives a relative or friend, the legal authority to make family or financial decisions on your behalf)

o Gather and keep important documents in a safe place (birth certificates, passports, immigration documents, copies of all income taxes, bills, etc.)
